TikTok and Plus-Size Fashion
If you’re active with your social media platforms, you’re probably familiar with, or have at least heard of, TikTok. It’s one of the largest internet communities out there, and definitely worth taking a look at if you’re into your fashion.
How has TikTok influenced the plus-size fashion industry?
One of the best things about TikTok is the opportunities it offers for every single person, leaving popularity completely down the community itself. This means a new generation of influencers and models have emerged, and one of the greatest things about these new influencers? They’re not the size 4 angels we’ve seen on the runways in the past.
TikTok has opened the world of fashion to models and designers of all body shapes and sizes and has fostered a society of body positivity and encouragement. The followings of mid-size and plus-sized models appearing on ‘for you’ pages across the globe have offered a more realistic view of bodies and represented those whose body types haven’t been previously recognised so much in the past.
Not only have these influencers spread the idea and awareness of what real bodies look like, but they’ve also encouraged others around them to share their own bodies and feel comfortable in their own skin.
It’s no secret that social media hasn’t always held a pristine reputation when it comes to cultivating a community of body positivity, but there’s something which sets TikTok apart, and it’s a platform which stands out as accepting and welcoming to everyone.
Pinterest has always been recognised as one of the online hubs for fashion and lifestyle inspiration, but for years many people have found it difficult to relate to the influencers and ‘models’ on the site. This has previously made it difficult to take inspiration from outfits on the platform, as people have felt more uncomfortable recreating them on their own bodies, or even questioned whether the outfit would look just as good on themselves.
However, one recent trend on TikTok is influencers recreating iconic Pinterest outfits on plus-sized bodies. Not only does this further spread the messages of acceptance and support of real bodies, but it allows those with mid-sized and plus-sized bodies to relate to the bodies they see modelling outfits and feel empowered in themselves.
Plus, it lessens the domination of tiny models with unrealistic bodies on our screen, and once again builds a safer environment for everyone to experience the world of fashion.
Final thoughts
It’s clear to see that, while social media still has a long way to go in terms of its journey to complete acceptance of everyone, TikTok is leading a strong path to this, and is full of confident, plus-sized influencers who are normalising realistic body types.
